“Film is 50 years behind other arts” (“8 1/2”)
“I think the lifespan of any art is about 100 years. When it is first created, it is loved by the masses, but as it gradually matures, by the time it reaches 100 years old, it is no longer understood by ordinary people and becomes only the entertainment of a few rich people, just like opera. I think that will happen with film too.” (Interviewed around 1990, nearly 100 years after the birth of film in 1895)
“Realism is a bad word. In a sense, everything is realistic, and there is no boundary between imagination and reality. I see a lot of reality in your imagination.”
